Eastwood Childcare Center

Situated just 400 metres from the bustling shopping precinct of Eastwood, the Eastwood Childcare Centre stands as a welcoming beacon within an established residential neighbourhood. This 66-place facility has been meticulously designed to offer more than just childcare—it is a vibrant environment that nurtures children’s curiosity, creativity, and personal development through thoughtfully crafted spaces and architectural expression.

At the heart of the centre’s design philosophy is the concept of interconnection. The spatial layout encourages fluid movement and engagement, both visually and physically, between rooms and play areas. Open-plan interiors seamlessly link with one another, enhanced by operable glazed partitions that can be opened or closed to adapt the space for different activities or group sizes. This flexibility ensures the centre can cater to a variety of learning experiences while maintaining a cohesive, inclusive atmosphere.

The indoor environments flow effortlessly into outdoor play spaces through large folding glass doors, which blur the boundary between inside and outside. Children can move freely between environments, stimulating their imagination and physical development. A suspended play net connects the ground and first-floor outdoor play spaces, further encouraging exploration and active play across multiple levels.

Inspired by the innocence and simplicity of a child’s sketch of an A-frame house, the architectural form embraces a refined yet playful approach. The building stretches horizontally and vertically in response to the programmatic requirements, creating purposeful volumes that are both functional and contextually appropriate. Despite its contemporary design, the centre remains sensitive to its surroundings—its form and scale harmonise with the suburban character of the neighbourhood, ensuring it blends naturally within the existing streetscape.

The building’s use of low-set, colour-framed fenestration is a deliberate design choice to connect with its youngest users. Windows are positioned at a child’s eye level, offering playful, framed glimpses to the outside world and encouraging a sense of wonder and connection to the community. These vibrant accents enliven the façade and invite engagement beyond the walls of the centre.

The centre’s interior and exterior play areas are carefully curated to promote diverse types of play, recognizing that each mode offers unique opportunities for learning and development. Generous, well-equipped spaces support imaginative play, social interaction, and physical activity—all crucial elements in fostering well-rounded growth.

The flexible, layered design accommodates varied group sizes and activities, enabling educators to tailor learning experiences that meet the needs of all children. Safety remains paramount, with the layout and materials chosen to create a secure yet stimulating environment where children can explore freely and confidently.

Eastwood Childcare Centre exemplifies a thoughtful balance between architectural innovation and community sensitivity. Its modest scale and considered form respect the peaceful residential neighbourhood it serves, while its vibrant spaces reflect the energy and potential of the children within. It stands as a model for future childcare environments, where design supports development and community in equal measure.
