Designing Density Well for Western Sydney: Penrith Competition Win
Fuse Architects is pleased to announce our selection as winner of the design competition for a landmark 49-storey mixed-use precinct in the heart of Penrith.
The proposal delivers approximately 400 new homes, supported by social and community infrastructure, alongside 5,000 sqm of retail and commercial space. Central to the scheme is the adaptive reuse of existing heritage structures, ensuring Penrith’s next chapter of growth remains connected to its civic and cultural past.A climatically responsive design approach underpins the project. Site-sensitive water management strategies, rainwater gardens, and generous tree canopies are integrated with shaded open spaces to form a cooling, connected public realm. Together, these elements shape a resilient, community-focused landscape that responds directly to Penrith’s climate and local identity.
This project continues the studio’s ongoing exploration of high-density living and resilient housing in Western Sydney. The region’s climate, geography, people, and subcultures are distinct and deeply influential to our architectural approach. The proposal acknowledges and celebrates these differences, translating them into design outcomes that are grounded, performative, and place-specific.
