Fuse Architects, in partnership with Black Beetle Landscape, has emerged as the winner of a design excellence design competition for a new 27 storey mixed-use residential tower at 37 Archer Street in Chatswood, hosted by Hyecorp Property Group. Selected from among three distinguished teams, the winning scheme was praised for its innovative architectural design and seamless integration within the Chatswood urban fabric, celebrating the vibrant character of this community.

Fuse Architects’ proposal features an elegant, north-facing hollow structural wall, commended for its architectural merit and its creation of dynamic, intimate spaces within the apartments and communal areas. The wall brings an interplay of light and shadow, enhancing both private living spaces and shared areas with a uniquely warm ambiance

“We’re thrilled to contribute to the reimagining of Chatswood’s CBD and to create a design that speaks to the area’s richly diverse community,” said Alain Assoum, director of Fuse Architects. “This project exemplifies our commitment to thoughtful, responsive architecture that respects its surroundings while delivering spaces people will genuinely enjoy and connect with.”

A key aspect of the design is a pedestrian-friendly through-site link, providing a spacious, inviting passage between Archer and Bertram Streets. The pathway is designed with clear sightlines, natural landscaping, and seating areas, encouraging engagement between residents and the broader community.

Drawing inspiration from modernist architectural elements, the design employs brise soleil shading devices across the building’s eastern and western façades. This feature enhances the building’s environmental performance, managing sunlight exposure and contributing to energy efficiency while adding depth and texture to the tower’s form. The design balances robust materials and fine detailing, creating an exterior that is visually striking from a distance while offering a human scale experience up close.

The competition, which invited submissions from DKO Architecture with Land & Form Landscape and PBD Architecture with Arcadia Landscape, demonstrated a high caliber of design talent. Fuse Architects expresses sincere appreciation to the other competitors for their inspiring contributions and for elevating the design dialogue for Chatswood’s future.

The design excellence competition was coordinated by Hyecorp Property Group with the support of the NSW Government Architect and Willoughby Council. The jury praised Fuse Architects and Black Beetle Landscape for their thoughtful urban design, contextual awareness, and dedication to celebrating Chatswood’s evolving multicultural identity.
